Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) in elders with symptoms of depression and to identify factors that influence depression.

Method: From August to December 2007, 102 elders were surveyed using structured question- naires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Cochran-Mantel Hanz test, ¥ö2 test and stepwise multiple regression with the SAS program.

Results: There were significant differences in ADL and IADL scores between a normal group and a depression group. The proportion of elders with adequate ADL and IADL status were greater for elders in the normal group than for those in the depression group. Factors significantly influencing depression were IADL and age.

Conclusion: These results indicate a need to focus on ADL, IADL and related factors to intervene in depression in elders. Also, depression prevention programs are necessary for elders.
